Match the tape to the peak temperature and duration
High-temperature tape must withstand the peak process temperature without melting, shrinking, or leaving adhesive residue. Polyester (PET), polyimide (Kapton), and PTFE backings cover most high-temperature applications.
PET tape suits powder coating up to 200°C for 20 minutes. Polyimide tape withstands 260°C+ for wave soldering. PTFE tape resists 260°C continuously and is used for release and low-friction applications.
Adhesive residue is a common failure mode
After high-temperature exposure, the adhesive must remove cleanly without leaving residue on the substrate. Silicone adhesive is common for high-temperature masking because it removes cleanly after baking.
Confirm the adhesive removes cleanly from the specific substrate. Test the tape under production conditions before approving it for a process. Residue can interfere with subsequent coating or bonding steps.
Check the backing thickness and conformability
Thinner backings conform better to curves and edges but may tear during removal. Thicker backings resist stretching and provide better edge definition for powder coating masking.
