Why does polyimide tape cost more than a standard masking tape?
The backing is the cost. Polyimide film keeps its mechanical strength well above the point where paper and PET backings degrade, which is what allows it to be used through solder reflow and to be removed cleanly afterwards. Substituting a cheaper tape in a high temperature step risks residue left on the board.
