Match the tape to the substrate and exposure
Outdoor sealing tape must bond to the frame material (aluminium, PVC, wood, or powder-coated steel) and resist UV, rain, and temperature cycling. PE foam or EPDM foam tapes with acrylic adhesive are common for door and window seals.
Confirm the tape's service temperature range covers the local climate. A tape rated for -40°C to +90°C suits most outdoor applications, but desert or arctic conditions may require a wider range.
Compression seal design affects durability
The tape must compress enough to form a seal without over-compressing, which can cause the foam to tear or lose resilience. Confirm the compression deflection and recovery with the manufacturer's data sheet.
For electrical enclosures, confirm the tape meets IP65 or IP67 ingress protection when compressed. For HVAC panels, check the flame retardancy rating and any relevant building codes.
Surface preparation and application
Clean the surface with isopropanol and apply the tape at 10-40°C. Press firmly to ensure full contact. For powder-coated surfaces, confirm the coating is fully cured before applying the tape.
