Density and thickness set the performance
PTFE tape for thread sealing is available in standard, high, and ultra-high density. Standard density is suitable for general water and air lines. High density fills coarser threads and resists blowout under higher pressure. Ultra-high density is specified for oxygen, fuel, or aggressive chemicals.
Confirm the thread type, size, and working pressure before choosing a density. A thicker tape fills more gap but can extrude under high torque if the density is too low.
Wrap direction and layer count matter
Wrap the tape clockwise in the direction of the thread so the fitting tightens without unwinding the tape. Two to three layers are typical for standard threads; more layers do not compensate for a mismatched density.
For gasketing or low-friction applications, confirm the width, length, and whether the tape needs to conform to an irregular surface. A filled or modified PTFE may seal better than virgin PTFE in certain chemical services.
Check compatibility before use
PTFE is resistant to most chemicals, but certain solvents, amines, and alkali metals can attack it at elevated temperature. Confirm chemical compatibility with the medium and the service temperature range.
