VHB tape replaces mechanical fasteners in many assemblies
3M VHB (Very High Bond) tape is a double-sided acrylic foam tape designed to replace rivets, welds, and screws in structural bonding. It distributes stress across the entire bond area, reduces weight, and seals against moisture and dust.
Choose the VHB grade based on the substrates, surface energy, thermal expansion mismatch, and outdoor exposure. Not every VHB grade suits every material combination.
Surface preparation determines bond durability
Clean the surface with isopropanol or a recommended solvent. For low-surface-energy plastics or painted surfaces, apply a primer such as 3M Primer 94 to improve adhesion. Abrasion can help on anodized aluminium but may reduce bond strength on other finishes.
Confirm the surface energy with a dyne pen if the substrate is uncertain. A surface energy below 35 mN/m usually requires a primer or a different adhesive system.
Design the joint for long-term performance
VHB tape viscoelastic foam accommodates differential thermal expansion, but the bond area must be large enough to carry the design load. Avoid edge loading and peel forces where possible.
Apply the tape at 18-38°C with firm, uniform pressure. Full adhesion develops over 72 hours, though the bond reaches about 50% strength after 20 minutes. Browse VHB tape products or request a quote with your drawing.
